Large Bore

(2009)
The best revenge is to live well, but that means you need your health.

This story offers one way to achieve that.

an excerpt from this contemporary short story …

It was silent, dark and chilly in the bedroom. A light atop the nightstand switched on as Pete began rummaging around inside the drawer.

“You won’t find it. I threw it out.”

Pete jumped like a squirrel scared by a cat. His feet left the floor, his heels clicked in mid-air as if he could invoke Auntie Em. The intruder was in the corner farthest from the nightstand. He sat in a chair shrouded in darkness holding something in his hand.

“Hiya, Pete. Scared ya, didn’t I?”

“Omigod, it’s you. Yah, you creep me out, scared the shit out of me. What the fuck are you doing here? In my house? What are you doing here Grady?”

The one word reply was both enigmatic and self-explanatory. “Kasha.”

Pete said, “Kasha. Yah. Kasha. OK. She OD’d. What about her?”

“Payback’s a bitch.”

Pete realized the older man’s hand resting on his thigh held a gun.

“When you came through that door you couldn’t tell what I have here now could you?. Large bore, small bore or scattergun.”

A spineless Pete whimpered, “What do you want with me old man? What’d I ever do to you?”

A brief meditative silence, then, “Do I have to say it again? Kasha.”

Pete must have thought it had to do with the apartment. “Yah, well, she put me on the lease, OK? When she OD’d I got the place. OK?”
